Fans Throughout History: CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19

Fans have been a part of man’s culture dating back to several centuries BC, and include use by the Ancient Egyptians, Kings and Queens of England, the Victorians, and 20C women. Cooling, swatting, and accessorizing have been achieved by using a range of materials from reeds, leaves and animal tails –to paper, satin and lace -to delicate ivory, tortoise and horn. Fans may be fixed or folded and provide the surface for exquisite enameling, painting, carving, and jewel work. This workshop will provide handouts and background information on the history of fans, and will include a display of a variety of museum quality examples from different time periods (17C to 20C). Identification of viewer fans will also be provided. The speaker, Dr. Abbey Cash, is a renowned authority on fans.

This program is part of the Donaldson Lecture Series.
