The History of Fans: Lecture and Special Exhibit

As part of this special event, Dr. Abbey Cash will provide a historic overview of fans as well as host a special, pop-up exhibit of her own personal fan collection. In addition, the Woodstock History Center’s costume curator, Rachel Kurland, will be on hand to show and answer questions about the museum’s current fan exhibit. Guests are invited to bring their own fans to show Dr. Cash if they are interested in learning more about them.

Dr. Abbey Block Cash: Bio

Abbey Block Cash, Ph.D., (a retired Professor of Education from SUNY, the State University of New York,) is currently Co-President of The Fan Association of North America (FANA), a national and international organization with members in 33 states and 14 countries. Her museum quality collection of fans, from around the world, span the 17th to the 21st centuries. She has exhibited and provided lectures throughout the US and other countries, and has advised major museums on the subject of fans; institutions include The Museum of the City of NY, The Ringling Museum in Florida, The Taft Museum in Ohio, and The Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

Abbey was honored with a 3 month exhibit and designated as Fan Collector of 2013 at the Healdsburg Fan Museum in California (the only museum dedicated to fans in the United States.) She has been collecting fans for over 30 years and proudly admits that her romance with fans is her “senior life passion.”
